She has Mexican roots, yet is American by nationality. Since she was a child she has had a strong desire to participate in sports. Gerina first started golfing at the age of 15. Gerina finished her high-school education at Goddard High School. In high school she won New Mexico's state golf tournament. In addition, she was a volleyball player at the state level. The year 2003 was the time she began her studies at the University of Texas. During her senior years she won every tournament she competed in. Through her college years she was awarded the Conference USA Player of The Award and the Female UTEP Sports Athletics Award.
